When's the last time you looked at ALL your expenses?

When we're trying to budget and prioritize, it's easy to just ignore certain expenses that we take for granted.

Things like your electricity or your trash service are typically assumed expenses we never really consider. But maybe it's time you DO consider them.

It's time to question EVERY expense.

In today's episode I'll explain what that means and why it's important to do every so often.

Action Task

For your action test this week, I want you to evaluate all of your expenses and recommit to the ones you value and cancel the ones you don't.

It may seem strange with some of them, but trust me, it's a mindset shift that can change your whole approach to managing money.

How committed to your expenses are you?

How many bills do you pay on autopilot and without question?

If it's more than zero, today's episode may be the wake up call you need.

We're going to discuss how to evaluate your expenses and make sure you're spending your money where you want to.

We're at the start of a new year, so what better time to reevaluate where your money's going?

And I'm not talking about the typical expenses like entertainment and food that you usually look to when your budget starts getting stretched. I'm talking about ALL your spending. Every. Last. Penny. It's time to reassess and refocus.

I want you to look at all the expenses you've got coming up and ask yourself if that's still legitimately a priority or even in alignment with your goals.

I want you to recommit to every expense. And if you can't, cancel it.

Netflix, Hulu, Spotify. Those are the easy ones. How about your cell phone, your trash service, your electricity.

It may seem obvious that you're not going to just stop paying your water bill, but taking the time to actually examine all your bills does more than just help you budget for them. It helps you reaffirm what you value and appreciate what you might be taking for granted. I mean, when's the last time you were consciously thankful for your indoor plumbing? I'm guessing it was probably the last time it broke, right?

Recommitting to all your expenses is great for your budget and can definitely help reset your gratitude filter, but it can also help you adjust your overall money mindset.

How many of us begrudgingly pay the utilities? I know I'm guilty.

I sigh at every electric bill, especially as they gradually rise and then skyrocket in the summer months. But this exercise helps me feel the gratitude of having air conditioning in our desert summers.

In fact, the more I started focusing on our electric bill being a priority, the more grateful I became until eventually I started to joyfully pay that bill.

I mean, maybe not like pure joy. But with the same excitement as when I buy a new toy for the dog or a new journal for myself.

Recognizing the value of the purchase has made paying bills a lot more calming and even enjoyable. When I actually sit and think, "I could be without air conditioning in 115 degree temperatures." The idea that, yeah, I've got a big electric bill coming, isn't really as bad.

Shifting your perspective of an everyday bill being an actual purchase, an exchange of goods not only helps you accept the cost, but also appreciate the value you're getting from it.

It's all just a matter of refocusing and making sure that every expense is an intentional one.

So now it's your turn.

For your action test this week, I want you to evaluate all of your expenses and recommit to the ones you value and cancel the ones you don't. It may seem strange with some of them, but trust me, it's a mindset shift that can change your whole approach to managing money.

Do you know someone else who could stand to hear this message? Forward it along to a friend or a family member and share the love.

As always take action and make it a great day.
